This prospective observational study followed sleep apnea patients who underwent polysomnography at AUBMC between the years 2004-2008 and evaluated the subsequent development of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMII) according to their use or non-use of CPAP, by phone interview, after obtaining their consent and that of their referring physician. Details of the number of nighttime awakenings, hours of use of CPAP at night, lifestyle changes, and development of incident diabetes, among other questions, were asked.

Of 553 individuals who underwent PSG at AUBMC between 2004 and 2008, our study population consisted of 191 patients who answered our phone call and completed the survey.
