The National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) is the largest aggregation of U.S. trauma registry data ever assembled. Participation is voluntary and is one of the leading performance improvement tools of trauma care. The operational definitions for the NTDB can be found in the National Trauma Data Standard (NTDS) Data Dictionary, which is designed to establish a national standard for the exchange of trauma registry data. Registry data that is collected from the NTDB is compiled annually and disseminated in the forms of hospital benchmark reports, data quality reports, and research data sets.
The data
elements include demographic information, injury epidemiology, injury
information (intent of injury, mechanism of injury, location of injury, type of
injury, place of injury) activity, alcohol use, substance use, arrival type,
pre-hospital care, emergency department information, ED and hospital disposition, primary cause of
death, airway management, injury severity and disability at discharge)
To ensure consistent data collection across States into the National Trauma Data Standard, a trauma patient is defined as a patient sustaining a traumatic injury and meeting the following criteria: At least one of the following injury diagnostic codes defined as follows: International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM): 800–959.9. Excluding the following isolated injuries: ICD-9-CM: 905–909.9 (late effects of injury) 910–924.9 (superficial injuries, including blisters, contusions, abrasions, and insect bites) 930–939.9 (foreign bodies)
The patient sustained one or more traumatic injuries.

If none of the following three was met (1- injury resulted in death, 2- the patient was transferred to (or from) your hospital via another hospital using EMS or air ambulance, 3- the patient was considered an admission based on your trauma registry inclusion criteria).
