1.      Incidence of all psychiatric presentations to the Emergency room at the American University of Beirut Medical Center a one year period.

 

2.      Percentage of Mental Health presentations out of all Emergency Room visits at the American University of Beirut Medical Center a one year period.

 

3.      Incidence of the different types of psychiatric presentations

 

4.      Description of the Presenting symptoms of psychiatric conditions

 

5.      Percentage of presentations mimicking serious life threatening medical conditions like Myocardial infractions, brain strokes, cardiovascular collapse…

 

6.      Rates of Suicide and death of these patients.

 

7.      Description of the treatment given in the Emergency room whether being talk therapy, observation, or psychoactive drugs administration.

 

8.      Rates of Hospital admission of patients with psychiatric complaints.

 

9.      Rates of patients with psychiatric complaints leaving against medical advice.

 

10.  Rates of psychiatric consultations done in the emergency room for these patients.

 The study will be a retrospective chart review study of all patients who presented to AUBMC emergency department between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Medical records at AUBMC will provide a list of patients’ charts that presented to the ED in this period. This period was chosen because scanning of ED charts and coding started on July 1 2009


All patients who presented to the Emergency room with a documented psychiatric diagnosis in the period of July1, 2009 to September 30, 2009.


Medical records at AUBMC will provide a list of patients’ charts that presented to the ED in this period. This period was chosen because scanning of ED charts and coding started on July 1 2009. The research fellows will scan the charts manually and selected the charts that are illegible for the study. This process will be done by 2 research fellows independently to decrease the risk of over selection or under selection.


·         Age 12-68

·         All patients who presented to the Emergency room with a documented psychiatric diagnosis in the period of July1, 2009 to September 30, 2009.


·         Age under 12 or over 68

·         All patients who presented to the Emergency room in the period of July1, 2009 and September 30, 2009 with no documented psychiatric diagnosis.
